A Message from the Board of Directors of Step1 Recovery Resources, Inc.

After much consideration, the Board of Directors of Step1 Recovery Resources, Inc. (Step1RR) has made the difficult decision to dissolve the organization.  This was not an easy decision. Step1RR was created with a simple purpose: fund recovery resources for people in Charleston’s Tri-County area affected by Substance Use Disorder but cannot afford recovery facility options. 

We have been operational for 21.5 months and during that time, 93 individuals received Step1RR scholarships. Of those individuals, 25 (27%) have reached at least six months of sobriety, one of the measures Step1RR established for its scholarship program. These are more than statistics. They represent 93 people given an opportunity to pursue recovery and 25 people who have demonstrated sustained sobriety. Behind every number is a person, a family, and a life impacted by recovery. 

None of this would have been possible without the generosity of our donors, who believed that people willing to work for recovery deserved an opportunity. We are deeply grateful for the trust you placed in Step1RR and for allowing us to put your generosity to work in the Charleston recovery community. 

We are equally grateful to Any Length Recovery, Potter House Recovery, and our other referral and recovery partners. You opened your doors to the people we were privileged to scholarship and shared our belief that recovery is possible. We also thank the many individuals and organizations throughout the Charleston recovery community who supported, encouraged, and taught us along the way. 

Step1RR intentionally operated with a working Board of Directors and no paid staff, allowing virtually all of our resources to go directly toward our mission. That model, however, required Board members and volunteers to devote substantial time to the organization. 

Over time, several of those who carried much of that responsibility for three and a half years reached a point where they could no longer make the necessary commitment. Despite considerable efforts, we were unable to recruit enough new Board members and volunteers to responsibly sustain the organization. 

To everyone who supported Step1RR, served on our Board, volunteered, referred someone to us, provided recovery services, contributed financially, or simply believed in what we were trying to accomplish:
